The pH level of your skin, including your scalp, is between 4.5 and 5.5, which means it is more acidic. Actually, your skin has a “film” on its exterior called the “acid mantle.” The purpose of the acid mantle is to protect your skin from contaminants, bacteria, and viruses and other environmental toxins. These attackers tend to be alkaline in nature, so the role of this acidic mantle on your skin is protection, which it accomplishes by dissolving the harmful particles trying to penetrate it. This is why maintaining your skin’s naturally acidic pH is important. Using shampoos and conditioners that are too alkaline can destroy the protective acid mantle. Unfortunately, the average pH of the typical name brand shampoo and conditioner is over 6. Because of the damage it does to the acid mantle, cleansing with shampoos and conditioners that have a pH over 5.5 is harmful to your scalp and inhibits proper hair health and thus hair growth and texture.

In addition, each day we build up dead skin cells, oil, sweat and hair products that form a plaque that sits on top of our scalp. This plaque causes our scalp pH levels to rise, leading to certain scalp conditions such as clogged follicles, bacterial infections, dry scalp, oily scalp, dandruff and even hair loss. Also, if you already suffer form certain scalp conditions, you can develop chronic flare-ups. Moisture retention is pH dependent. Maintaining an acidic pH less than 5.5 causes the hair cuticle, the outside layer of your hair shaft, to flatten and seals the moisture into the hair shaft leading to richer, fuller hair. Most shampoos and conditioners have higher pH levels leading to hair shaft swelling which opens up the hair cuticle leading to loss of moisture and hair shaft damage, as well as dry, frizzy hair.

The Hair Rejuvenation System’s unique delivery system utilizing glycolic acid in a low pH formula is proven to reinforce the roots and improve hair structure, repair and restore pH balance to the scalp, and generate body and volume. It can safely be used for fine, thinning or chemically treated hair.

Glycolic acid is a scientifically advanced skin care ingredient that is derived naturally from sugar cane. It is commonly used in facial cleansers due to its powerful exfoliating ability. In addition, it functions to repair the surface of the scalp by loosening and sweeping away oil (sebum), dirt, bacteria and dead skin cells from the scalp and hair. This process restores overall body, thickness and manageability for visibly healthier hair. It also restores moisture content and pH of the scalp and hair to create an environment suitable for hair follicle growth.

Around 97% of our hair is comprised of a structural protein called keratin. Aminoplex is a completely natural oral supplement formulated with specific amino acids (building blocks of protein) that produce keratin. It rejuvenates brittle and thinning hair for a visibly thicker, healthier appearance.

Hair grows from the inside out, and so does hair health. That’s our approach with the the Hair Rejuvenation System. The Aminoplex supplements work to nourish hair with essential amino acids, while the volumizing glycolic acid shampoo and conditioner go deep down to treat the conditions that rob your hair of moisture and vitality, restoring body, shine and volume.

While shampooing your hair is extremely important to maintain the health of your hair, it is of equal, if not of greater importance, to effectively cleanse your scalp to remove the build up of debris you develop daily.

It is often thought that frequent shampooing can dry out the hair’s natural oils (sebum). Your hair’s natural oils sit on top of your hair shaft but don’t penetrate the hair cuticle like water does. So proper daily shampooing with low acidic hair products don’t strip your natural oils, they hydrate your hair. It’s moisture (water) and not your hairs natural oils that keep your hair supple. In addition, your scalp and face produces the most amount of oil (sebum) compared to any other part of the body. So it’s important to cleanse your scalp daily, the way the skin all over the body requires cleaning for good hygiene. You take your hair and scalp to the same places you take your face, and it gets just as dirty.

It is completely normal to lose up to 100 hairs a day and a proportion of this hair falls out when you shampoo. The act of hair washing simply dislodges hairs that have already become detached from the base of the hair follicle and are ready to fall out. This can also occur with brushing and/or styling your hair. There is this misconception that frequent shampooing causes your hair to fall out so when people begin to shampoo less often, even more ends up in the shower since the hair that would normally come out daily now builds up on the scalp. The simple solution is to shampoo every day and the excess hair in the shower will go away.

Individuals with hair thinning and/or hair shedding may benefit from certain hair growth medications. The two most common treatments are Finasteride (brand name: Propecia®) for men, and Minoxidil (brand name: Rogaine®) for both men and women. Both treatments are FDA approved and have their own distinct purpose in treating hair loss. Although these two hair growth products may stabilize hair loss and even re-thicken thinning hair, they do not work on areas where the hair is completely gone (bald). The reason being that once an area of scalp is bald, the roots down below are absent. Therefore, these medications cannot regenerate a root to grow a new hair shaft. In addition, for both medications, if you stop using the medication at any point, what you have gained from either Finasteride or Minoxidil will be lost within months. You will simply return to the level of hair loss had you never used the medication, and likely continue to lose more hair as you age. During your consultation, Plano, TX hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Joseph Yaker, will identify your cause of hair loss and discuss hair growth treatment methods to help combat your condition.

The increase of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) onto genetically susceptible hair follicles is what causes male pattern baldness. Finasteride is a medication that blocks testosterone from converting to DHT by up to 70%, which helps control, stop, and even restore hair loss. Here are some facts about this medication:

  • It is the only FDA-approved oral medication for the treatment of male pattern baldness.
  • It is a once-a-day pill available by prescription only.
  • The medication is 90% successful: 48% will have re-growth of hair and 42% will have no further hair loss.
  • It takes 6-12 months to achieve a cosmetic benefit
  • Of patients with male pattern hair loss that do not use Finasteride, 75% will become “much worse” within 5 years.
  • Positive effects from Finasteride can help reduce the extent of hair transplantation (number of grafts required) by stabilizing future hair loss and possibly re-growing hair naturally.
  • Finasteride can be used to improve the result of hair transplant surgery by stabilizing the hair follicles surrounding the transplanted hairs, allowing for a better overall result.
  • Reported negative side effects are limited to fewer than 2% of patients. These side effects may be reversible on dose reduction and tend to diminish over time with continued use.

It is impossible to ensure the potency of formulations made outside of FDA control. Many companies that manufacture Finasteride (generic) are in countries outside the United States, where quality control methods may not be as regulated, leading to less effective outcomes. As a result, Dr. Yaker offers patients a specially compounded version of Finasteride, known as Nutra.Fin. This made-to-order medication is made in the United States and contains the ingredient Finasteride in addition to hair-promoting vitamins and minerals to help nourish the hair.

Minoxidil is an FDA-approved topical solution that is used to help stabilize hair loss and promote hair re-thickening in both men and women. While the mechanism of action is not completely understood, this medication has been shown to dilate blood vessels and open potassium channels, allowing more oxygen, blood, and nutrients to the follicle. This process actively nourishes and stimulates hair follicles, stimulating hair growth. Here are some facts about this medication:

  • Twice daily Minoxidil has been shown to regrow hair in 85% of men and 60% of women.
  • Visual benefits may take 4-6 months; however, some patients may require 12 months of twice daily use.
  • This medication can be started 6 weeks to 3 months before hair transplant surgery to possibly prevent or limit hair shedding that might occur after surgery.
  • The most common side effect from Minoxidil is skin irritation and possibly unwanted facial hair that will disappear shortly after discontinuing the medication.

HÄR LAB NO. 1 is a custom-made topical medication for men and women that acts as a hair follicle stimulator. In addition to having the active ingredient 5% Minoxidil, it also contains retinoic acid for enhanced penetration into the skin. A low-potency steroid has been added to reduce redness and inflammation, in addition to anti-oxidants and other hair-promoting ingredients. More importantly, this topical medication is made without propylene glycol (a common skin irritant found in over-the counter Minoxidil and Rogaine®). Once applied, it is gently massaged into the scalp with your fingers so it can reach the hair follicles under the scalp. It is recommended that you allow the topical formula to sit on the scalp for at least three hours before wetting the hair (showering, excessive exercising) in order to maximize medication absorption.

HÄR LAB NO. 2 contains the same ingredients found in HÄR LAB NO. 1, plus the DHT-blocking medication, Finasteride. This topical medication is used in the same way as HÄR LAB NO. 1. With topical Finasteride gaining popularity due to proven results with minimal risks of side effects, more men are choosing this treatment option as opposed to oral Finasteride. In addition, men who are concerned with or who have had sexual side effects with oral Finasteride have been able to safely switch over to HÄR LAB NO. 2. Female candidates include women who are not of child-bearing age or who have had tubal ligation, or their ovaries removed.

Hair loss is a major concern for many men and women, whether it is caused by age, genetics, hormones, medical conditions or even due to styling practices and/or products. With recent advances in research in the field of hair restoration, new treatments have been created to help combat the condition. Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, is an emerging nonsurgical based treatment for both men and women that is showing remarkable results in slowing down, stopping and even reversing hair loss. PRP has also shown promising outcomes in patients with alopecia areata and thinning eyebrows. Plano, TX hair transplant surgeon, Dr. Joseph Yaker, is one of only a small handful of hair restoration surgeons to offer Placenta-Derived Extracellular Matrix Therapy. He includes this powerful blend of growth factors and bioactive proteins to help strengthen the function of your hair, leading to longer, thicker, healthier hair.

Platelets are a component of blood that contain specific growth factors. These growth factors, once introduced into the scalp, activate your own stem cells and help generate new hair growth by stimulating dormant hair follicles, and preserve and thicken hair. It is also used during hair transplant surgery to assist in healing of the skin, and helps stimulate hair transplants to grow while improving hair graft survivability. While PRP therapy has recently received a lot of attention, it has been in use for several decades. PRP is currently used in many areas of medicine, including orthopedic and sports medicine, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery and cardiovascular medicine, as the growth factors found in platelets have been shown to accelerate wound healing, tissue repair and skin rejuvenation.

Extracellular matrix from donated live, human placental tissue and amniotic fluid contain a powerful mixture of growth factors, bioactive proteins, carbohydrates, and hyaluronic acids. This complex network acts as a structural support to surrounding cells. When used with platelet rich plasma, this creates a boost to the hair growth response. The placental tissue/amniotic fluid is received from consenting, pre-screened donors during caesarean birth and are processed at an FDA regulated laboratory.

As a non-invasive solution, the PRP with placenta-derived extracellular matrix therapy is a short 60-minute in-office visit. The process begins with acquiring a small amount of blood from the patient and placing the blood sample in a special machine that spins the blood at high speeds in order to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood components. Next, a local anesthetic is applied to the scalp and the concentrated platelet rich plasma is reintroduced into areas of the patient’s scalp that show hair thinning. Finally, microneedling is performed on the scalp to create micro-trauma and micro-channels into the skin, which activates the PRP and allows them to penetrate deep into the skin. Dr. Yaker’s protocol for non-surgical management of hair loss consists of an initial treatment, followed by maintenance treatments approximately every nine months to one year.

PRP has six distinct steps. The images below show the procedure.

Step 1

First, blood is drawn from the patient.

Step 2

Next, platelets which contain growth factors are separated from the rest of your blood.

Step 3

The scalp is then numbed using local anesthesia.

Step 4

The platelet poor plasma (PPP) is separated from the platelet rich plasma (PRP).

Step 5

PRP is then mixed with the ECM and injected just beneath the scalp.

Step 6

While microneedling the scalp’s surface, PPP is spread across the scalp.

Because PRP is made from your own blood, there is no chance of allergy or rejection. In addition, the use of amniotic fluid doesn’t cause rejection or allergic reaction when injected into a patient.

There is no downtime following this procedure, with virtually no limitations or restrictions. Most commonly, patients may develop some redness, minimal swelling and mild tenderness to the treated areas. These symptoms may last up to 48 hours. While results differ for each patient, cosmetic benefits are typically seen around 4 to 6 months after the first treatment, and will continue to improve up to a full year following treatment. As PRP with ECM is not a permanent solution for hair loss, repeat treatments are recommended every 9-18 months. It is important to note that PRP with ECM does not grow new hair follicles in areas where you are already bald. It is used to help reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles so they will produce healthier, thicker, longer hair fibers.

Patients experiencing hair loss may benefit from low level laser therapy (LLLT) as a nonsurgical way to help treat hair loss. LLLT preserves and stimulates the hair follicles in patients with hair loss disorders, such as male and female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). Plano, TX hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Joseph Yaker, offers this technology in a portable hands-free device called the LaserCap®. This device allows both men and women to receive treatment in the comfort of their own home, without any side effects.

LLLT preserves and stimulates hair follicles through a process called phototherapy, where specific wavelengths of light from laser diodes increase blood flow and cellular energy production to the hair. This pain-free process helps make hair cells function better, improving hair quality and strength.  Whether used in combination with other nonsurgical treatments or hair transplant procedures, LLLT has the potential to significantly slow down hair loss and promote hair growth by improving the health of hair follicles.

Until recently, low level laser technology was only available through in-office devices, in hair hair clinics. Introducing the LaserCap®. This take home device contains 224 individual 650nm/5mW laser diodes in a portable, lightweight, dome-shaped casing that surrounds the scalp in pulsing low level laser light. LaserCap® offers full head coverage and clinical laser therapy quality that can be worn outside of the doctor’s office. Patients simply place the LaserCap® inside of a hat and wear the device for approximately 30 minutes, three days per week. Because hair growth is a slow process, aesthetic results may be visualized 4-6 months after beginning therapy. Results will vary depending on the condition of the hair at the beginning of treatment. In comparison to other devices, the LaserCap® is discreet, more powerful, and available by physicians only.

LLLT using LaserCap® runs about $1,699. There is also a lifetime warranty on the device.

Hair restoration is not only delivered in the form of hair growth medications, laser devices, PRP, or transplantation. For some men and women, scalp micropigmentation offers the illusion of real hair when hair transplant surgery is either not an option or not desired.

Scalp micropigmentation is a revolutionary, nonsurgical alternative that applies permanent, medical-grade pigments to the scalp. It offers the look of very short hair, which is great for men who keep their heads closely shaved. It also works well for men and women with hair thinning or scars who simply want to hide their exposed scalp. Plano, TX hair transplant surgeon, Dr. Joseph Yaker, offers scalp micropigmentation for patients desiring this nonsurgical approach that eliminates hair loss through the art of pigmentation. It not only looks like real hair, but it blends in like real hair and offers minimal upkeep.

Scalp micropigmentation is best used on hair loss patients regardless of skin tone or hair color, who are not candidates for hair transplant surgery or are looking for a non-invasive treatment. It can also compliment hair transplant procedures by making your newly transplanted hair appear fuller. Men with hair loss who closely shave their head can also use this non-invasive procedure as a way to redefine their hairline and appear as though they have tightly shaved hair. In addition, patients with scarring, more specifically the linear scar left behind following an FUT surgery, can benefit from this procedure as the pigmentation can hide a scar.

Scalp micropigmentation is a safe and effective hair replication procedure that is performed by our licensed and certified micropigmentation specialist under the guidance of Dr. Joseph Yaker. The permanent, all-natural pigment is color matched to your own hair and applied directly into the skin, creating thousands of tiny stipples (pigmented dots), replicating the natural appearance of real hair follicles. The pigment itself is organic and does not contain any harmful chemicals or metallic ingredients traditionally found in tattoo ink. As a result, there is no concern for the color to distort or fade over time. These unique pigments also naturally age with your hair, blending in if you begin to gray.

Since the pigments applied don’t penetrate the skin as deep as traditional tattooing, pain is minimal. Each patient requires four sessions, seven to ten days apart. The length of the first two sessions can take anywhere from two to four hours. The third and fourth session may last as little as forty-five minutes, up to two hours. After the procedure, patients will have mild redness that will subside within the first few days. The final result occurs two to four weeks after your final procedure, as it takes time for the pigments to settle into the scalp and blend in. The end result is a 3D visual illusion of natural-appearing hair.

Since very little aftercare is required, we do not sell unnecessary, expensive post-procedure products. The redness/irritation to the scalp should last from 24 to 72 hours, however there is no pain. It is recommended that you refrain from exposing the scalp to chlorine (no swimming), and sweat (no exercise) for 5 to 7 days following the procedure. You may begin grooming your hair with an electric razor with no guard after 5-7 days. It is extremely important that you stay away from the sun. Sun damage can break down the pigments and cause fading. If you are exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time, please wear a hat or apply sunscreen (SPF 30 with zinc oxide) to protect your scalp from harmful UV rays. It will take up to 4 weeks for the pigments to completely blend in and reach its final color.

Each day sweat, oil, debris, and dead skin cells form an invisible plaque on the scalp. The plaque build up can obstruct hair pores and lead to poor hair health and scalp inflammation. Therefore, it is extremely important that you wash your scalp effectively in order to effectively remove the plaque buildup. When drying the scalp with a towel, make sure to pat dry and not rub.

For patients who are looking for the cropped hair or buzz cut look, you will need to keep your hair shaved to create an illusion of 3D hair growth. With our procedure you do not need to use a traditional razor to blade shave your scalp. Instead, you may use an electric razor with no guard (1/16th of an inch) every few days. Daily moisturizing is important to ensure your scalp remains hydrated.

The cost of scalp micropigmentation averages between $2,500-$5,000, depending on the location and size of the desired treatment area. The price includes all four required sessions.
