Eyebrows are an essential part of the face. Aside from protecting your eyes from moisture, they accentuate the eyes, create a window for expression, and are a marker for facial identity. Eyebrows define how we look, and an elegantly shaped and arched eyebrow can be very becoming. Unlike the loss of scalp hair, the loss of one’s eyebrows is not viewed as a natural process and is, therefore, not cosmetically acceptable.

When penciling and tattooing can no longer create the look you want, eyebrow transplant surgery can restore the beauty of your brows. Board-certified hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Joseph Yaker, performs eyebrow transplant surgery for Plano and Dallas-Fort Wellington, Texas area patients who wish to restore their eyebrows and regain their self-confidence to show their face from all angles.

EYEBROW HAIR LOSS

Eyebrows can be lost for many reasons. They can be absent from birth, thin over time due to age and genetics, fall out due to skin conditions, other medical diseases and cancer treatments, or fail to grow back due to repeated plucking, compulsive hair pulling (Trichotillomania), burns, scars and even chemo or radiation therapy.

Men and women who have lost their eyebrows often feel anxious and uncomfortable in social situations, fearing that the focus is on their missing eyebrows. Eyebrow hair transplantation is a permanent solution for those individuals who wish to restore complete loss of their eyebrows, enhance thinning eyebrows, or conceal scars within the eyebrow.

SURGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Dr. Yaker performs permanent, state-of-the-art eyebrow transplant surgery using either Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) or Follicular Unit Extraction (SmartGraft™ FUE). Eyebrow transplant surgery is an in-office procedure performed using a mild oral sedative and applying local anesthesia to each eyebrow. Before surgery, Dr. Yaker carefully designs the shape and arch of the brow based on personal features, natural hair direction and the patient’s goals.

The surgical process involves removing hair from the back of the head (permanent donor area), and carefully transplanting them into artistically placed sites on the eyebrow area created to mimic the natural growth pattern of each eyebrow. On average, it takes anywhere from 100 to 400 hairs per eyebrow depending on facial features, hair characteristics, hair loss and brow design, in order to create a symmetrical, full appearance.

WHAT TO EXPECT

After surgery, it is important for patients to follow Dr. Yaker’s post-operative instructions to ensure effective healing and hair growth. Within 1-2 days after surgery, tiny scabs will appear on the transplanted area. Some mild swelling, redness and bruising may appear within the first few days, but will subside. The tiny scabs will go away within 7 days and, just like in scalp hair transplantation, the implanted hairs will fall out, beginning 2-3 weeks following the procedure as the hair follicles underneath the scalp make way for new, healthy hair.

Hair regrowth in the recipient eyebrow areas begin around 3 to 4 months later. It takes about 12 months for final results to be achieved, allowing for the transplanted hairs to grow and blend in with the existing brows. Because the hair used for eyebrow transplant surgery comes from an area of the scalp where hair growth is continuous, the eyebrows will need to be trimmed and groomed on a routine basis.

Patients don’t find this to be an issue as most are used to routinely plucking or penciling their eyebrows. Eventually, trimming becomes less frequent as the growth rate slows down. While in most cases a patient’s desired outcome can be achieved with one session, subsequent procedures may be required to achieve greater density.

EXPECTED COST

FUT allows for a much larger graft extraction in a single session and is more economical than FUE hair transplantation. FUE prices are the same price as the FUT procedure. Both FUT and FUE procedures range from $8 to $9 per graft, depending on the size of each case.

EYEBROW TRANSPLANT FAQS

WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR EYEBROW TRANSPLANT?

Individuals with straight or slightly wavy hair are candidates for eyebrow transplant surgery. This procedure is for men and women with thinning, sparse brow hairs or no eyebrows, as long as medical conditions have been ruled out and/or treated. Medical conditions that cause eyebrow loss include thyroid disorders, alopecia areata (hair loss due to an autoimmune condition), or trichotillomania (an impulsive disorder that causes the patient to compulsively pull out hair).

Women who have previously undergone eyebrow tattooing may still have an eyebrow transplant. In fact, the combination of the two treatments create the appearance of a fuller density.

IS MEDICATION AVAILABLE FOR EYEBROW LOSS?

Currently, there are no FDA-approved medications on the market to help with eyebrow regrowth. The majority of over-the-counter products fail to produce any noticeable results, including Rogaine® (generic name: Minoxidil).

Latisse® (generic name: Bimatoprost) is FDA approved for the treatment of inadequate eyelashes but not for eyebrow hair restoration. While the off-label use of Latisse® may slightly help to thicken eyebrow hairs, they do not replace missing hair. Currently, hair transplant surgery is the only option for fully restoring the eyebrows.

ARE THERE RISKS OR BAD RESULTS INVOLVED IN EYEBROW TRANSPLANTS?

Eyebrow hair transplantation carries minimal risk. Although pretty rare, the transplanted hair can grow in a different direction than desired. If this occurs, the hair can be removed by plucking, or trained to grow in the proper direction. Before your eyebrow transplant, Dr. Yaker will go over your medical history and discuss the most appropriate treatment options unique to your situation. Dr. Yaker will also discuss the potential side effects of the procedure and how to best take care of yourself after surgery.
